The Lewis House of Music

A new tradition of piano study built on the foundations of Classical pedogogy.

I remember one of the first things I noticed, auditioning at various conservatories and colleges throughout California in 2023, was how every music department manages to look like a hospital. I joked about it at the time, but in retrospect, it seems to me that this aesthetic - some dry, solved, flat-lining institution - is a microcosm of what the "classical" world has become. The culture so many in our history cultivated will not survive long if this continues. There is no greater problem of our time to solve, and no greater purpose for a teacher.

About the Studio.

The piano studio as a workshop.

Central to my philosophy is the idea that I, as a music teacher, should create a living environment from which music can cultivate and thrive. Yes, my pupils will first and foremost learn that basic mechanics of our craft, but they will equally learn what makes the music tick: the theory, what the music could "mean", how to interpret it at first glance, the drama of its history,  how to make it their own. They will also be included in a community of like minded individuals where, should they choose, they can bounce ideas off one another, challenge me, and cultivate original ideas of their own.

Being an, at present, primarily online studio has many challenges, but among the benefits are the creative ways I can communicate with my pupils and the ease they can communicate with other, like minded individuals from any distance. Along side the one-on-one lessons I host via Discord, I also host public workshops, recitals, and lectures on a monthly basis. Each of my pupils, as I tailor their curriculum to their needs, will be heavily encouraged to engage in these activities.
